The Serra da Estrela is the backbone of Portugal, and the highest mountain range at 1993m, where granite spires and mountain pastures characterize the highest peaks in the land. The serra is riddled with a network of footpaths, giving easy access to one of the best walking regions in Portugal. The small, tranquil market towns that surround the serra are comfortable hiking bases.
In the Serra da Lousã, enjoy the eerie sensation of exploring mountain hamlets abandoned for decades.

Fishing Info - lots of good sea and river fishing available in the area. You don't need a licence for sea fishing but you do for river fishing. It costs 6 euros per year for a regional licence and 9 euros a year for a national licence. You can get a license from any fishing shop but the shop won't do it on the spot. It'll take a couple of days to come through as they go to the official government office to do it. You will need ID (passport or ID card). Children under 14 don't need a licence if accompanied by their parents.
